If you ever have to fire someone on the job, the best way to do it is standing up.

If you and the person you are firing sit down, more than likely the person getting fired will want to discuss the firing. At the point of someone getting fired, there's no room for discussion on what happened. A decision has been made and you aren't going to un-fire them by discussing it, so keep standing.
